
Robert W. VanSumeren holds a B.A. and M.A. in Comparative Religion. While in graduate school, Robert completed a certification in Spirituality, Culture and Health. During law school, Robert earned a graduate certificate in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Studies (CADAS) from Wayne State University’s School of Social Work. Robert earned his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School.
While in law school Robert completed internships with the Washtenaw County Public Defender Office and the Family Law Project (FLP) in Washtenaw County. While at the FLP, he represented survivors of domestic violence in various family law matters, including PPOs, child custody and divorce.
Robert serves as Corporate Counsel and VP of Compliance at Starr Commonwealth in Albion, MI. He is a founder of Jackson Transitions, is active in prisoner re-entry circles, and facilitates weekly SMART Recovery meetings at the Henry Ford Allegiance Addiction Recovery Center in Jackson, MI. He is married to an art teacher, has two children, and two cats.
Robert’s journey to the practice of law has always been motivated by a desire to help the people who are where he once was. Among lawyers, Bob’s story is unusual because he has seen life from both sides. As a result of his experiences, he knows what it takes to overcome adversity and as an advocate he is earnest in his belief that a person should not be defined by the darkest periods in their life.
